Getting Better (OK…Less Bad)

The latest U.S. employment report had more elements of good news than perhaps any report in nearly a year, although all is obviously not well with employment. Still, it is nice to talk about more signs of an American economy now very likely transitioning out of the longest and most painful recession in our lifetimes.
As you have no doubt heard ad nauseam, much of the July employment news was better than had been expected. Job losses were less than the consensus forecast, while the unemployment rate actually declined slightly. (more…)

Recession karma: What goes around, comes around, during a downturn.

The word “karma” gets breezily tossed about in pop culture. However if we go back a few millennia, things were different. The word karma wasn’t followed by “is a bitch” on bumper stickers.
Before karma showed up in trendy yoga shops, it showed up in ancient religious texts. Here’s an excerpt. (In case you haven’t brushed up on your sanskrit, I’ll translate.)

Stop re-arranging the deck chairs.The greatest problem with change is that no one wants to admit that it can happen to them. The big three automakers kept ignoring signals from both the consumer as well as the market place. Be honest about potential downturns and get ready. Don’t create the doomsday, hand-wringing scenarios but ones that are well thought-out with a plan of action in your back pocket. Contingency is the name of the game. It’s rather like a fire drill. If you don’t have a plan, you can burn up!
